Plato’s ideas and philosophy have had a significant impact on Western thought and continue to be studied and debated today. Indeed it’s often said that the entirety of Western Civilisation are mere foot notes to Plato.  Some of the lessons we can learn from Plato and how these can be applied in modernity include:

  1. The importance of self-knowledge: In the Apology, Socrates (Plato’s teacher) argues that the pursuit of knowledge and self-knowledge is necessary for living a virtuous and fulfilling life. This idea has been interpreted as a call to individualism and intellectual freedom. In modernity, we can apply this lesson by prioritizing our personal growth and development. By taking the time to reflect on our actions, motivations, and values, we can gain a better understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
  2. The value of critical thinking: Plato’s use of the Socratic method and his emphasis on questioning the status quo demonstrates the importance of critical thinking. In modernity, we can apply this lesson by questioning assumptions and challenging commonly held beliefs. This can help us to approach problems and situations with an open mind and to develop creative solutions.
  3. The importance of ethical conduct: Plato’s philosophy emphasizes the importance of ethical conduct and living a virtuous life. In the present, we can apply this lesson by striving to act in accordance with our values and principles. By making ethical considerations a priority, we can contribute to a more just and equitable society.
  4. The value of dialogue: Plato’s use of dialogue in his writing demonstrates the value of engaging in meaningful conversations with others. Today, we can apply this lesson by seeking out opportunities to engage in constructive dialogue with people who have different perspectives and opinions. This can help us to broaden our understanding of the world and to develop empathy and understanding for others.
  5. The importance of leadership: Plato’s philosophy emphasizes the importance of ethical leadership. This more than ever is lesson that we should apply today by seeking out and supporting leaders who prioritize ethical considerations and who are committed to making positive changes in their communities and the world.

Overall, the lessons we can learn from Plato’s philosophy can help us to develop a more thoughtful, ethical, and engaged approach to our lives and the world around us. By applying these lessons in modernity, we can contribute to a more just and equitable society and make meaningful contributions to the world.
